When you fly into Fairbanks there are Taxi and Uber services available. However, we recommend guests get a rental vehicle because the Fairbanks area is so spread out between lodging, dining, and activities. It ends up being drastically more convenient and economical. The ranch is immediately off of a paved main road that is maintained year-round by the State. A 4x4 is not required during the winter months but if one is available, it would be preferential. All our igloos have block heater outlets to plug in your vehicles during the cold winter months.

How do I get there?

We are located at 23.5-mile Chena Hot Springs Road about 26 miles or a 40-minute drive east of the Golden Heart City of Fairbanks. The Ranch is located in a quaint mushing and agriculture township called Pleasant Valley. We are just a few miles away from The Chena River State Recreation Area which is 254,080 acres of forests, rivers, and alpine tundra for year-round activities. Pleasant Valley has something to offer for everyone.

The Aurora season in Alaska is from the beginning of September to the end of April. There are three main considerations throughout the Aurora season: the fall equinox, winter solstice, and spring equinox. Geomagnetic storms are twice as likely around either of the equinoxes so there is significantly more solar activity. During the winter solstice there are about 20 hours of darkness, so the potential viewing window is at its longest. As you move away from one advantage you are getting closer to another so there is no bad month.

March is recognized as the best month for Aurora viewing during the winter season. It has the advantage of increased solar activity from the equinox. Also, it is at the end of winter, so snow accumulation is near its peak, but getting into early spring so it typically has warmer days making it perfect for winter activities. Historically March also has more clear nights increasing visibility to see the lights.

If you want to see the lights but not when it has the potential of being too cold, September may be a better option for you. The interior of Alaska has breathtaking rich fall colors and plenty of summer activities are still offered. With it being a warmer month, the water is still open and not frozen over so you can get those nice reflection photos of the Aurora over a calm body of water.

The strongest lights appear between 9pm and 2am. Nights with minimal or no cloud coverage are best for viewing.

All our igloos have full kitchenettes equipped with a stove top, microwave, sink, mini-fridge, silverware, dishes, and basic cooking essentials.

There is a cafe half a mile away from the ranch that is perfect for breakfast, brunch and coffee. There is also a very renowned Pizza Bus a few miles away with extensive menu options. All other dining options are a 35-minute drive away in town.
