Our Igloos
The igloos are named after caribou herds in Alaska.
Nelchina: The Nelchina caribou herd roams the high basin surrounded by the Talkeetna, Chugach, Wrangell, and Alaska ranges. The herd has sustained Alaskans for centuries and is managed today to ensure hunting opportunities for present and future generations. Like all caribou herds, Nelchina caribou are prone to cyclic highs and lows. Since the 1990s, however, wildlife managers have worked to maintain the herd at sustainable levels by regulating harvest.
Mulchatna: Mulchatna Caribou Herd (MCH), from the Bristol Bay area of SW Alaska, take their name from their identified traditional calving grounds: the upper Mulchatna River region. During the latter half of the 20th century, the MCH population began to grow substantially and by the mid-1990s the caribou population peaked at about 200,000 animals, and then the herd began simultaneously declining and expanding its range north and west. Recovery efforts are underway.
Fortymile: The Fortymile herd migrates between Alaska and Yukon. It was once estimated at about 600,000, and its range stretched from Whitehorse to Anchorage. By 1974, the herd was estimated at about 4,000, and it stopped migrating to Yukon. Conservation actions, including hunting restrictions and the sterilization of wolf packs were taken and the herd grew, although recent research suggests that wolf control was not a significant factor in the herd’s increase. By 2002 it was once again migrating into Yukon. In 2017 the estimated herd size was 71,000. Enjoy video footage from caribou collared animals.
Tonzona: At this time, the number of caribou within the Tonzona herd is unknown. Its range is from the Herron River to the lower Tonzona River near Telida and north of Otter Lake. Summer concentrations were found in the foothills of the Alaska Range; and winter range consisted of lower elevation areas from Telida up the Swift River and north to the Otter Lake area.
